Students experience traditional village life, folk games, and local crafts during the “Menggamit Memori” student tourism programme at Homestay Sungai Klah in Sungkai.

SUNGKAI, 20 September 2026 — Students gained first-hand experience of traditional village life and rural hospitality during the two-day “Menggamit Memori” Student Tourism Programme held at Homestay Sungai Klah over the weekend.

Running from 19 to 20 September, the initiative let participants stay with local foster families, introducing them to community-based tourism, rural traditions, and homegrown cottage industries.

The weekend itinerary featured a variety of cultural and recreational activities, including traditional folk games such as galah panjang and tarik upih. Participants also observed craft demonstrations utilising oil palm fronds to weave ketupat casings and construct traditional rib brooms (penyapu lidi), followed by an excursion to the nearby Sungkai Klah Hot Springs.

In addition to cultural exchanges, students participated in a corporate social responsibility (CSR) communal clean-up (gotong-royong) across the homestay grounds, working alongside residents to foster environmental stewardship and community ties.

The programme concluded with a closing ceremony officiated by Dato’ Mohamad Kamil Dato’ Shafie, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tourism Perak, alongside Kholijah Abdul Hamid, representing the Perak office of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).

State tourism representatives noted that such educational initiatives offer meaningful experiences for youth, instilling a deeper appreciation for Perak’s community-based tourism assets and unique heritage.
