Perak Strengthens Commitment to Malayan Tiger Conservation on World Tiger Day 2025

World Tiger Day 2025 in Gerik, Perak, highlighted the state’s crucial role in protecting the Malayan tiger. Organised with RIMAU, the event featured awareness campaigns, community ranger programmes, and conservation pledges, reinforcing Perak’s commitment to wildlife preservation, eco-tourism, and shared responsibility in safeguarding Malaysia’s natural heritage.

GERIK, 21 August 2025 – In conjunction with World Tiger Day 2025, Perak has taken another significant step in reaffirming its commitment to wildlife conservation, particularly in protecting the Malayan tiger, an emblem of Malaysia’s natural heritage.

The celebration, held in Gerik, Perak, brought together conservationists, government representatives, and community leaders to underscore the urgency of collective action in safeguarding this critically endangered species.

The event was organised in collaboration with RIMAU (The Malayan Tiger Conservation Alliance), an organisation dedicated to tiger preservation through community empowerment and habitat protection. With Perak serving as one of the last remaining strongholds for the Malayan tiger, the programme highlighted the state’s vital role in national conservation efforts. Gerik, strategically located near the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex, was chosen as the venue due to its significance as a crucial tiger habitat.

Among the highlights were awareness campaigns and educational activities designed to foster understanding of the threats faced by the Malayan tiger, including habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. Through these initiatives, the organisers aimed to strengthen public participation in conservation efforts while inspiring the younger generation to become advocates for wildlife protection.

RIMAU also showcased its ongoing projects in Perak, including community ranger programmes and habitat monitoring initiatives aimed at reducing poaching and supporting coexistence between local communities and wildlife. These efforts reflect a broader vision in which conservation is not limited to government agencies but is shared across society.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that align with Visit Perak Year 2024’s legacy of promoting sustainability. By protecting the Malayan tiger, Perak not only safeguards biodiversity but also enhances its appeal as an eco-tourism destination that prioritises harmony between nature and people.

World Tiger Day 2025 in Gerik serves as a timely reminder that the survival of the Malayan tiger depends on united action. Perak’s leadership, in partnership with organisations such as RIMAU, stands as a beacon of hope for ensuring that this iconic species continues to roam the forests for generations to come.
